Toll Road Task Force Meetings Announced

Earlier this year, the state passed legislation to fast-track three major new toll roads that will destroy large swaths of Florida’s last remaining rural lands, pollute waterways, and threaten endangered wildlife. Florida’s remaining natural areas are worth more than the sum of their parts. To the people who live there, these lands are home.

The Northern Turnpike, Suncoast Connector, and Southwest-Central Connector all threaten our way of life. The pollution they bring will be detrimental to our air and water and the roads will further fragment important habitat for Florida’s species like black bear and Florida panther. Economically, it is irresponsible to invest millions of dollars in these new roads while our current roads are crumbling. Small towns will be left behind as toll roads bypass their communities, turning once rural places to sprawling suburbia. Most importantly, the toll roads and their rushed planning process purposefully sped this bad idea into implementation. It’s simply bad governance. As Florida faces threats from climate change, we should be investing in ways to ensure a healthier environment and brighter future for all.

    Like the I-75 Reliever study I’m not sure what role these meetings play. After the Reliever Study FDOT followed it with a little known but published meeting called the I-75 North Corridor Study or something like that. It basically trashed the recommendations of the Reliever Study. Then they sprang the secretly developed Coasta Connector Study. In this case they plan to release the alignments for the 3 roads in January which in essence means they are already working on it. This is usually done during a PD&E Study where a number of options are developed and receive public input. They have already said though that the “No Build” is not an option. The whole point of a PD&E Study is to evaluate the pros and cons of these alignments and determine if the road will in fact solve transportation problems or not. So since the “No-Build “ is off the table to say your having a PD&E Study is like saying you are having a jury trial but there won’t be a jury. It’s all a con job to develop rural land so big landowners can cash out. If you are buying the hurricane evacuation reason #1 then you must have missed Irma and Dorian that also devastated Georgia. If you are buying the bringing the prosperity of the rest of Florida. to rural areas they tried this before in 1998. Toll roads by pass towns so the towns told their legislators to kill it as it would cause them to lose business which they needed. So it bit the dust. When you have such bogus reasons to spend $10 Billion on these roads, maybe $20 Billion , something smells pretty damn fishy.
    Let’s look at what the bonds for the Suncoast Parkway 1 said was the reason for their need. In the General Overview of why the road was stated they stated that the road was needed to get to the Starkey and Pottsberg ranches in Pasco County. You can’t lie or it’s not advisable to lie to the SEC. I don’t know about the Pottbergs but the Starkeys made out like bandits.
    It is what it is. We are being taken again to the cleaners. Hopefully and probably Georgia will sue once they see the impacts on their environment and that they will have to pay to widen their roads so Florida can continue to have unbridled growth.
