BAD NEWS: Governor DeSantis Ignores Pleas for Veto, Signs Anti-Voter Initiative Bill Into Law

published on: June 10, 2019

Bad news from Tallahassee: late on Friday evening, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bad anti-voter initiative bill into law. This bill (HB 5) adds severe restrictions on a fundamental constitutional right of the people – the right to bring questions to our fellow citizens via ballot initiative.

Thank you for taking action to protect our democracy. Over the past week, more than 1,200 conservation voters like you sent letters to the Governor asking him to veto this bad bill. Thousands more made their voices heard during session.

When the Florida Constitution was drafted in 1968, the authors could not have been more specific about Constitutional Amendments, writing that, “the power to propose the revision or amendment of any portion or portions of this constitution by initiative is reserved to the people.”

Protecting our democracy is a core part of FCV’s mission. We appreciate every signature and social media share and your dedication to good government and smart environmental policy.
